In the light of recent developments in India's privacy and data protection landscape, we are organizing Round Table Discussions on Building an Indian Data Protection Framework: Next Steps at Bangalore(14th Feb) and Mumbai (21st Feb).

The following three on-going processes are expected to play highly determinative roles in shaping our regulatory landscape:

1. The Supreme Court of India is currently hearing final arguments on a batch of 29 petitions led by K.S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India that have challenged various aspects of the Aadhaar scheme.

2. A Committee of Experts set up by the Government of India is in the process of drafting a comprehensive Data Protection Bill. Extensive public consultations involving public comments on a white paper and four open house discussions have already been conducted by the Committee.

3. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is working on making its own recommendations on data protection with emphasis on the telecom sector, but also covering data protection generally.

Against this backdrop, this round table will host a discussion on the road ahead for privacy and data protection in India. Various experts in the field from across the multi-stakeholder community will take stock of the judicial and regulatory processes described above, discuss how they might interact in building an Indian data protection law and what such a law might look like, and go over ways to meaningfully influence these processes in the interest of building a truly robust data protection framework.
