Two girls were arrested by the Mumbai Police following a complaint made by a Shiv Sena member, under Sections 295 of the IPC (intent to outrage religious feelings) and Section 66A of the IT Act.
One of the girls had posted a comment on Facebook questioning the shutdown in Mumbai after the death of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackrey and her friend had 'liked' the comment on Facebook.
The girls' subsequent arrest had sparked a nationwide outrage which embarrassed the Maharashtra government. Following the uproar, two police officers were suspended in connection with the incident while the Magistrate at Palghar who ordered bail for the girls was transferred. Later, the police had concluded that there was no evidence against the girls.
